Tattoo Design Ideas Building a Sleeve Piece by Piece

Whenever I'm stopped by people curious about my tattoos, they always ask the same three questions...

1) Did it hurt?

Some areas were definitely more sensitive than others, but I actually liked the feeling. My foot tattoo sucked pretty hard though. Of course, it all comes down to your threshold for pain. I didn't like the way my foot felt, but that's not going to stop me from going back to tattoo the other one!

2) Who's your artist?

Bob Witten at Skin Deep Tattoo (Hilo, Hawaii). I love his work so much, I hand out business cards ;)

3) How many hours did it take?

That last question gets me. I'm really not sure how to answer it since my first arm tattoo was inked over ten years ago. It takes a while for me to count up the hours under the needle until I finally just admit that my sleeve was a piece-by-piece project which started years before it ended.

At first glance, the colorful swirls of ink seem to flow in unison. Yet a closer inspection will reveal the different symbols, each unique in meaning and memory. I'm living proof a tattoo sleeve can be created through patchwork. If you're interested in a sleeve like mine, here are some ideas: Ink Biography

My tattoos reveal things about my personality, beliefs, and childhood that I normally wouldn't bring up in a conversation. Some are personal reminders that keep me on a positive track when I'm need a little boost in morale, while others are simply there for the sake of art itself.

Every person has a clear definition of what they deem visually appealing. Symbols that are beautiful to some may repel others. Yet a tattoo should not be based on other people's perception of you. Don't go running off to the tattoo parlor just because someone said a rabid version of Hello Kitty would look "totally epic" on you. Remember that a tattoo is a piece of living art that should speak your soul. Therefore, make sure choose symbols that you can connect to specific moments and memories in your own life...(no offense to those who can actually connect to rabid Hello Kitty, lol!) This One's For You

Family had a great influence on the symbols found in my sleeve. My mother, born in the year of the dragon, was always my protector. Her guidance, grace, and wisdom fueled the idea behind my Gunner tattoo. My father (el mejor cocinero de las hamburguesas con chili verde) inspired the bright-eyed candy skull. My grandfather, a navy officer, is represented in the bluebird while the cherry blossoms floating all around remind me of my grandmother. If you're thinking of doing a tribute to your loved ones, I suggest symbols with subtle yet meaningful connections. The stories of love behind each of these symbols will convey much more than just words in ink. A Tribute to Nature

Nature's elegance and allure is unsurpassed, yet paying homage to the beauty of nature through art is a common theme. Apart from being universal symbols of season and locale, tattoos designs inspired by flora and fauna often carry other symbolic meanings for the collector. The band of morning glory was my first arm tattoo not because I like the flower, but because I AM the flower. My middle name, Koali, means "morning glory" in Hawaiian. My mother showed me the delicate, violet blossoms scattered in vines along sands of Haupuna beach. I remember picking a flower once and watching it die in my hands, turning to a limp film that clung to my skin. As I looked around at the other blossoms smiling in the sunshine, I felt guilty. Many years later, ink brought my blossom back to life. Connect the Dots

The strawberry plants scattered around my forearm, while having symbolic meaning, also serve to frame the tattoos that were inked separately. Cherry blossoms also help connect the pieces together. I even have them framing the Pokemon on my foot. As for the spaces that couldn't house pictures, Bob used bright hues of blue and yellow to add a cloud-type pattern to the mix. Finding allegorical designs, patterns, and colors that are simple and easily duplicated can help create continuity in your sleeve.

Always remember that a tattoo is a decision you will live with forever. It's vital to be confident in the longevity of a piece's appeal before going under the needle. Tattoo removal is expensive and painful. Refer to the chart below see if you're really ready for ink. In addition, be sure to research the artist, his/her previous work, and the tattoo shop's credentials before the gun starts to BBBbbzzzzzz!!!

Tattoo Care and Healing Aftercare Advice

Tattoos can be red, swollen (raised-up), weepy/bleeding and just plain sore when they are done. The more complex a design and the longer you sat there, the greater the chances for these symptoms. If your tattooist had a really firm grip on you or if you tend to be sensitive to it, there might even be a few bruises.

If your tattoos increase in redness, become more painful, and either the skin or the fluids weeping out become yellow-greenish in color, those are all classic signs of an infection. In those cases, either go back to your tattoist or doctor to have the infection confirmed and evaluated.

If left untreated, infections can not only damage the tattoo itself, they can potentially lead to something life-threatening like blood poisoning.

Some people have allergic reactions to tattoo inks or and experience adverse skin reactions. To determine this, you need to see a doctor or dermatologist. If you have more questions about if your tattoo might be infected, Go See Your Doctor!

Tattoo Apprenticeships, How To Get Them And Why You Need Them

An apprenticeship is the basis for a great tattoo career. They are not easy to do, not easy to get, not easy to prepare for, not easy to pay for. But all of this is for a reason. This hub will help you learn the ups and downs, pros and cons of getting a tattoo apprenticeship and how to go about getting one.

Please note: Feel free to contact me with questions by clicking the 'Contact Me' button. I will respond as soon as I can!

PLEASE NOTE: The purpose of the article is to help educate and guide you in your journey to becoming a tattoo artist. Every shop and teacher will be different, but what follows is a good jumping off point to knowing what to expect.
Most of all: DO NOT TATTOO UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR APPRENTICESHIP!
There are many reasons why you absolutely need an apprenticeship, but the one that people tend to forget: Apprenticeships are not only a crucial training period, they are a right of passage. Show respect for this community and those who have earned the right to tattoo.

An apprenticeship is what a potential tattoo artist (and piercers) have to go through to become a professional artist. Think of it as earning your wings. Here are the basic steps.

1. Building a portfolio

First and foremost, do not walk into a shop with a portfolio of actual tattoos you've done. This is absolutely unacceptable for several reasons. One, you don't have any idea what you are doing. Two, you can cause irreparable damage to the person you tattoo. Three, that artist will have to take time to not only teach you the right way to tattoo, but wean you off 'scratcher' habits. Bottomline: You should NOT be tattooing unless you have been trained by a licensed professional. Never. No exceptions.

A portfolio consists of 50 to 200 drawings. This means COMPLETED and COLORED. You don't want to walk into the shop with a sketch book full of doodles and half complete ideas. Choose only your best work, what you feel best showcases your talent. Portfolios should be in an actual portfolio, placed and matted in sheet protectors. Choose a portfolio that looks professional, don't just use a three ring binder. Presentation is all about showing how professional and serious you are about getting your apprenticeship.

As far as drawings go, you want to have a wide array of work. Draw things that people usually get tattooed and some of your own creative ideas for tattoos. DO NOT copy other artists work. If that's your idea of tattooing, then you had better find a different career. If you are having a hard time deciding what to draw, think of different life experiences that people would get tattooed. Tattoos are all about commemorating a time in your life, remembering something/someone or simply for adornment reasons. In your career you will constantly be doing these kind of tattoos. Ask your friends what they would get tattooed and draw it. There's no better way to prepare yourself than to talk to people who may be your potential clients someday.

Draw everyday. Make every drawing your best. Don't give up on an idea just because its too hard or boring because you will not always have a choice when it comes to tattooing. Again, all drawings must be complete. Color them using your choice of medium. Watercolor/Ink is widely thought to be the most similar to actually tattooing.

2. Finding a Shop

Find a shop with a good reputation. You want to learn from someone who actually wants to teach you, has a good educational background, and who will challenge you. This person is responsible for helping you learn the basics and some of their own tricks for tattooing so you want the best. Apprenticeships will cost you from nothing to around $5,000+, so you will want to make it worth your while.

Persistence is absolutely key in this process. If possible, get tattooed by the artist you want to learn from. Even better, get tattooed as much as possible (there are many reasons for this advice). Hang out in the shop, if they'll let you. Even volunteering your time there can help you build a relationship with the artists there.

3. The Apprenticeship

When you get an apprenticeship, prepare to be what they call the 'shop bitch'. You don't get paid and you do all the dirty work. Take care of the trash, set up/break down stations, make sure they're stocked, sweeping, run errands, etc. Chances are for awhile that's all you'll be doing. They do this to make sure you're actually interested in doing the job, to weed out the unworthy. So take these tasks as an honor. You're lucky to be there! So act that way. And don't wait to be asked to do these things, just do them.

When you start learning, you will do a lot of watching. You will sit and watch several tattoos being done. Stay attentive. The best way to learn is through watching. You will learn how to make needles, use the autoclave, and all the health precautions to be taken (including blood borne pathogen certification). After, you will start learning to use the tattoo machine (NEVER call it a gun!). At first, you will tattoo on fake skin, fruit and maybe even yourself, depending on your teacher. You will learn about all the different set ups for the machines, the difference between liners and shaders, etc. You will also have to keep drawing, learn how to draw things quickly and well. Its a LOT of hard work so don't get discouraged. Apprenticeships can take 6 months to 2 years, so plan accordingly.

4. Becoming a Tattoo Artist

You will do around 100 tattoos for free during your apprenticeship. But free tattoos mean that YOU will pay for them. So make sure to have a lot of money saved up for supplies. You can tattoo friends, family, whomever you wish. After that, you will possibly tattoo some clients at the shop.

Then the time will come you take your test to become certified. You absolutely need to take this test or you will be risking your reputation and possibly get into some trouble with the law.

Once you've passed your test, you may start tattooing and charging for it! So Congratulations! You've made it.

5. Professional Work

Generally, the shop you learned to tattoo at will have you on contract for at least a year after you've completed your apprenticeship. Keep working hard, take pictures of every tattoo you do, add these to a new portfolio. After your contract is up, you may choose to stay at your home shop or you may find a different shop. A huge part of your work is networking. A large portion of the work you get will be through word of mouth, so get to know other artists, collectors, etc. Go to conventions! Put yourself out there, don't let yourself become complacent. You are responsible for your success at this point, no more coddling or hand holding. Go for it! Your future is yours to shape.

Saying Tattoo Wise Phrases from Philosophy, Bible, Buddhism

People have asked me questions on sayings tattoo, e.g. what phrases to have, where to get them, how to get sayings tattoo in other languages….etc. As I dig into this topic more, I have discovered these useful tips.
1) Language

The majority of sayings tattoos is in English. True, English is an international language so it is natural to see why English phrases are so popular. Your expression can be easily understood by others. However, there is no reason why you should limit your choice. In today's trendy world we all love diversity, rarity and novelty. Don't we? It is fun to have your sayings tattoos in another language. Consider these exciting possibilities:
Asian languages: Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, Thai.
Western Language: Latin, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Greek.
Other languages: Hebrew, Hindi, Yiddish, Arabic.
Indigenous languages of Australia
Aboriginal language of America or Canada
2) Your Expression

The common concern for tattoo lovers is to find the right saying for themselves. Many people ask the eternal question "Can you please find me a suitable phrase for tattoo?" I answer is "you need to do some work yourself first". After all, it is your ink, your expression, no one understand this better than yourself. I have two suggestions that can help.
Culture / countries: focus on quotes from different cultures around the world, just like what I have done here, e.g. Indian, Chinese, Greek, Buddhist quotes or phrases.
Purpose / desire: look for quotes classified under different categories, e.g. faith, action, wisdom, forgiveness, anger, friendship, funny, love, nature, time, etc.

rib tattoos - information and ideas

Rib tattoos have become widely popular in the past few years -- with men and women alike. There are some major differences between getting a rib tattoo and getting your wrist tattooed, or the small of your back. A tattoo on the ribs can be either extremely painful for some, or moderately painful for others depending on your pain tolerance.

Since its all bone and little to no muscle tissue, the pain can seem like a slight [sun]burn or someone sticking your repeatitively with a very large sharp object. Rib tattoo come in all shapes and sizes. Thye range from your average joe to super famous acors and actresses, like Megan Fox. For example, she has a tattoo on her ribs with a poem saying, "there once was a little girl who never knew love until a boy broke her heart." Rhianna is also a well known name who has a small gun tattooed on her rib cage.

Alot of rib tattoos on women range from the typical flowers, stars, hearts, butterfly, word/quotes, ect. Rib tattoos for men usually include more masculine ideas such as [last] name(s), children's name, birds, pin up girls, knives, or 50s-esque pin up girls with a modern day twist.

Because of the pain, most people opted for usually smaller pieces of art but ultimitely the rib cage is a perfect area for tattooing large art work on. With those who opted for flowers, or bushels of them even, tend to have bigger pieces as the colors are more vibrant and bright and also included ALOT more detail which makes the piece even better in most cases.

The tattoo artist also depends on the pain factor as well. Usually they've had enough expierence to be able to go with how much pain you're in if you let them know. They can make it to where you can expierence as little pain as possible (again it WILL hurt regardless though since you ARE getting a tattoo obviously)

The usual time for a rib tattoo to heal is about the same for any other tattoo -- two weeks give or take a day or so. It would be advised to keep cleaning and waiting for it to peel/heel for about an extra week only because unless you plan on going shirtless for two weeks after its done, your clothes and almost anything else that is in contact with your torso could not only alter it a bit but also send you screaming in pain because of the sensitivity.

I know some women who have had rib tattoos and gotten pregnant have found though that the tattoo streches as the baby gets bigger. It might go back to the way it was before afer the kid is born, but unless you're constantly working out to get your pre-baby body back, it might take a while.

In the long run, rib tattoos are extremely unique; and if well thought out with the idea -- very intriging as well. Most people enjoy seeing them on other people, and its a great conversation starter. If you're considering getting one, I would think long and hard about it but if you're dedicated to it and do your homework on it, I believe that you won't be dissapointed with the end result.

Prison tattoo meanings, Jailhouse tattoos, Prison tattoo art, Bad tattoos

The Texas Syndicate - A gang of Texans incarcerated in California started this group. They are closely related to the Aryan Brotherhood. They are known for extreme violence and a special tattoo that they no longer use very much due to marking themselves as the TS.

The 18th St. Gang out of the West Side of Los Angeles. They started out as second generation Mexican immigrants. This group has grown to national proportions and even includes non-Hispanic members. They may have tattoos of 18th Street , XV3, XVIII, 666 (which equals 18), Dieciocho, or spell out Eighteenth Street.

The Latin Kings out of Chicago are known for their 3 and 5 point crown and 5 point stars tattoos. They begin their gang names with 'King' as in King Carlos or King Beto, etc. They are a Latino gang and their slogan is 'Amor del Rey' (ADR) or Love of the King.

Female Gangs are still in the making. Most females are attached one way or another to a male gang and they are not considered true members of the gang. Their ranks are increasing however, and all girl gangs are beginning to show up in the prison population.

Asian Gangs have existed for many years and quite possibly go back to their originating country. There are the Triads, Tongs, Yakuza, or Boryokudan in both the originating country and in the U.S.A. They are into home invasion type crimes and car theft as well as teaming up for protection in jail. These gangs have many names and many tattoos. It is probably best to avoid Chinese or Japanese characters unless you are quite certain of the meanings being inked permanently into your skin.

Native American Gangs have been formed all over the country in response to the other gangs crowding in on them. Native Americans may be associated with outlaw biker gangs. They do tend to try to protect Native American interests in or out of prison. It is an attempt to organize all Native American tribes. At best, these gangs help protect Native American interests, at worst, they are a collection of teenagers who indulge in crime, drugs, and violence. Native American tattoos are all considered sacred and must be earned. As long as you don't go overboard with Native American symbols or have them tattooed on your face and hands, you should be safe enough.

Outlaw Biker Gangs should be avoided at all costs. These gangs are very violent and protective of their members. They have many requirements for club membership and they are unique to the clubs. Skull tattoos are common as are motorcycles, leather items and weapons. They prefer to use patches sewn into their leather "cuts". However, they do love to get inked - a lot.

Pin Up Tattoo Images Sailor Pin Up Tattoos, Retro Pin Up Girls, and More

I'm in love with the 50's. There...I said it. And guess what all that entails? Pin up girls! Though I have a few tattoos, one the tattoos that I've always longed for is a pin up girl tattoo. The style, sexiness, and class of the 50's pin up girl was realistic and simply perfect. Think of Bettie Page and you'll know what I mean. Were the pin up girls racey? Oh yes! That's why they'd make a perfect tattoo - for men or women.

In this hub, I'll share with you some of the best pin up tattoo images that I could find on the net and also why they were selected. I'll also give you some ideas on what pin up tattoos and retro pin up girls are the best to get plastered on your body.

There are many options for pin up girl tattoos available. Honestly, your imagination is what limits the options. You can do it a few ways:

a. You could find a picture of a retro pin up girl online for inspiration for your pin up tattoo image
b. You could draw your own pin up girl, if indeed you have artistic talent (unlike myself)
c. You could find a retro pin up girl picture from an antique/vintage magazine or newspaper ad

If I were to choose a pin up girl tattoo for myself, it would most likely have Bettie Page as the centerfold. Bettie Page's naivete yet provocativeness always thrilled me when looking at her pictures. Who better to get as a pin up tattoo? Bettie Page in leopard-print clothing, in her infamous black lingerie outfits, or without much on at all! She was sinfully divine...and more than perfect for a pin up girl tattoo.

Some people also choose to go with a Marilyn Monroe pin up girl tattoo. Marilyn is a rather popular choice, so I suggest choosing someone different.

What's your favorite pin up girl pose? Think about getting your pin up girl tattoo to mimic that pose. Here are some ideas:
retro pin up girl changing tire (as pictured)
sailor pin up girl tattoo
retro pin up girl doing laundry w/ skirt stuck in basket or dog's mouth, etc.
pin up girl at a picnic
retro pin up girl w/ skirt blowing up (Marilyn-style)

Whatever retro pin up girl tattoo image you choose as inspiration (whether you copy one or draw your own), make sure it's a pin up girl tattoo image that is cute and tasteful. I say the more retro it is, the better...but you should make it your own and to fit with your personality.

Paw Print Tattoos And Designs; Paw Print Tattoo Meanings And Ideas

There are also a few other animals that are chosen for paw print tattoos. The wolf, tiger, and bear are three popular choices when it comes to paw print tattoos. These paw prints differ from cat and dog paw prints. The wolf, tiger, and bear paws often leave claw trails or claw marks. Tattoo artist have come up with some creative designs with these paw print tattoos. One interesting design has the image of the animal within the paw print. The bear and wolf paw print are often designed within dreamcatchers as well. Make sure you take the time to view all the different ways to use these paw print tattoos.

Paw print tattoos are a great choice for anyone that loves animals. It is a great way to love and honor those extra members of our families. If your are Native American, bear and wolf paw prints are a great way to represent your rich history and tradition. Paw print tattoos can serve purpose in all types of men and women, all across the world.

Paw print tattoos can also be a cute and adorable way to honor your children as well. Since paw print tattoos are cute, you may want to get a paw print and had your child's name inked beside it. If you have three children, you could get three paw prints and have your children's names inked by the paw print. You could get creative and paint blue paw prints for your boys or pink paw prints for your girls. You could get a large paw print for your oldest or a small one for the youngest. There are plenty of things that you can do with paw print tattoos. Sometimes, you just have to think outside the box. Just something to keep in mind.

There are some important things you should remember before you go and get inked. Make sure you take the time to research your tattoo and make sure you fully understand what it represents and stands for. Don't rush to get inked. So many people get tattoos on an impulse and they usually regret what they get. Getting a tattoo is a big decision. Make sure you weigh everything out before you take the leap. Pagan Tattoos and Wiccan Tattoos

Are you a Wiccan or a Witch? Maybe you'll want to get a Wiccan tattoo or a Witch tattoo. There are many options for you in the line of Wiccan tattoos. Because Wicca is such a nature-based religion, you could go for any plant, flower, or animal that you share a connection with. Owls, cats, dragonflies, butterflies, wolves, horses, birds, and more make original and meaningful Wiccan tattoos.

Don't want to get an animal tattoo as your Wiccan tattoo? Go for Wiccan symbology such as the pentacle or the four elements. You could get the triquetra or even an Egyptian ankh, depending on your tradition and beliefs within Wicca. Wiccan tattoos are easy to think up and can be very original and unique to you.

Check out some of the witch tattoos to the right. How about a witch's silhouette flying on a broom into the night? A pin-up style retro witch is adorable, stylish, and makes a perfect Wiccan tattoo. Maybe you don't want to paint a pentacle on yourself for the rest of eternity...try a Wiccan tattoo with the sun and the moon! Or get a tattoo of the goddess. I've seen crescent moon tattoos put on the back of the neck, under the hair so as to be able to cover the Wiccan tattoo if need be. Don't get a moon right on your forehead, whatever you do!

Black cats as Wiccan tattoos are cute and meaningful for many witches. A black cat in the moon is even more perfect as a Wiccan tattoo.

The whole point in getting a Wiccan tattoo is to make it meaningful and fun to you, so don't mimic a tattoo that someone else has. Make it your own. Be creative and make sure you get a tattoo that you're going to want for the rest of your life. Trust me, I know what it's like. You'll also want to make sure you're getting your Wiccan tattoo in a place on your body that can be easily covered. Why? Because if you ever work in a professional environment, your boss might not want your pentacle Wiccan tattoo on display for all the clients to see. Really any tattoo should be put in a place where you can hide it easily enough.

Other Wiccan tattoos could include your sign (Sagittarius, Scorpio, etc.), your favorite colors, fairies, mermaids, etc.

Octopus Tattoos And Meanings-Octopus Tattoo Designs-Squid Tattoos, Designs, And Meanings

The octopus is a very intelligent creature of the sea. The octopus is able to use its brain to process complex thoughts. Their able to think and react to a variety of different situations, symbolizing that they are intelligent. Their ability to change color and spray ink are only two of their defensive mechanisms. Octopus are also able to regrow their arms, which represents regeneration. Male and female octopi have very little differences in body structure. In the tattoo world, there is none. One interesting fact about the female octopus is that they can lay up to 150,000 eggs, symbolizing fertility. Male octopi can show off their "colors" when tempting to attract a female. Octopus are very independent and they are known to eat their own species.

Make sure you take the time to view all the different octopus tattoo designs on this page. This can help you find ideas for your octopus tattoo design. As you already read, you can do a lot with octopus tattoos. You may have a specific color that you want to go with or a specific pattern for your octopus tattoo design. Remember, any ideas or advice that I give is my personal opinion. It is up to you whether you listen or not. In saying that, I believe vibrant exotic colors look great. Orange looks great on the octopus, but not in the light blue water. If I was to go this route, I would use dark blue water.

Octopus tattoos for men look great in orange, red, and green. If you go green, go dark and use a bright yellow for detailing. Yellow, pink, and orange look great with a vibrant shade, as a bright color. Pink and black go great together for any female octopus tattoo. Since several designs include water, I would suggest only adding a little water compared to designs that have the octopus surrounding by water. The detail and color are very important to your octopus tattoo. I would suggest a tattoo artist that is great at detailing. Remember, you can include anything with your octopus tattoo. Appropriate symbols include sea shells, jelly fish, or other aquatic animals. I believe that octopus tattoos look better in large designs compared to smaller designs. However, as long as it is detailed right, either looks great. The important thing is to find what you like and get exactly what you want.

There are some very important things that you should remember before you choose your octopus tattoo or any tattoo. Make sure that you take the time to research your tattoo. Make sure that you fully understand what it symbolizes and represents. You don't want to find out later that it stands for something totally different. Don't rush to get inked! I always try to suggest this because men and women do this all the time. Don't get inked on an impulse. Those who do get tattooed without thinking usually have regrets about this choice later on down the road. Yes, not all of them, but most of them. If your not completely sure, give it more time. If you feel that octopus tattoos are not for you or you want to view more tattoos, please feel free to follow the links below. Thank you for your visit.

Learning How to Tattoo Well

Getting a good sense of color for tattooing is going to be a major value. Not only do you have to understand what a color will look like when it mixes with flesh tones you need to get good at picking an separating colors.

The best way to get used to thinking about color separation is to do some collages. Get colored paper and make a shape. Now create shadows for that shape by putting a different color on top of it. Once you have a good sense of how the colors interact try making shapes and shadows as separate pieces with as little overlap as possible. I suggest starting with light colors and adding the darker colors. Darks can cover lights, but getting rid of dark color doesn't work well.

Get some tattoo picture books.

Get some books that have lots of pictures. Look to see what colors you see, and don't see, and how they are used together. Use your inking skills to replicate the designs you see with clean lines. As you look through 100s of pictures you will see that really amazing tattoos have great line work, that will be your most important skill, rendering clean lines.

Pick up some markers.

Now that you have a good sense of line shape and color pick up a basic set of Prismacolor or Copic Markers. These are some nice quality markers that you can use to practice more color combination and separation. Keep practicing until you can do an intricate pattern or picture on a coffee cup with clean lines.

Design a tattoo for yourself.

You shouldn't be putting things on other peoples bodies until you know the experience first hand creating and going through the process as the canvas.

Find someone to apprentice with.

Start off flyering for an artist you like and show them that you are dedicated and want to work for them. As an apprentice you are an assistant, you will start learning about all the things the shop does before you get to work on people. These are important skills to know, you will probably spend more of your career cleaning up and setting up than you will inking. So, use your apprenticeship to make friends and challenge yourself. Anytime that you get a chance do a version of things you hear people working on. Look at the flash on the wall and think about how you can make it unique. And most of all be friendly -- tattooing involves a lot of time dealing with people.

Good Luck!

Interested in Tattooing Power Supply Points and Tips Lesson Three

Finally let's talk very briefly about power supplies that have digital displays and memory settings. I definitely prefer these types of P.S.'s. I by habit make sure that my tattoo machines are tuned mechanically first. For me it works great because the P.S. I use has memory settings built in to remember which voltage is set for a specific type of tattoo machine (liner/shader). There are differences and you will see what I mean when you begin tattooing and become more confident in your skills and knowledge. What I like the most about the digital display power supplies is this; you can see how much voltage you are using, you can also determine if you have a capacitator going bad, the voltage will be very different than normal, and I guess as a lazy man you can visually set the power settings.

Ok so that is the lesson for the day… sorry for the delay everyone… remember if you have any questions or comments please do so I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Talk to you all soon!!!

Interested in Tattooing Lesson One

15. Most but not all kits will come with a green soap solution that you can reduce with spring or filtered water, city water out of your sink is ok too. Spray bottle is fine, squirt bottle in my opinion is about equal, the only noticeable difference in my opinion is that with a squirt bottle you generally apply it to the paper towel you are going to wipe with, this does give you more control with where you are wiping, instead of getting overspray on an already fading stencil, or spraying it into your buddy's wife face. I have done both I like the squirt bottle.

16. Alcohol water 50/50 mix… make sure your alcohol is 70% and above for it to be an effective cleaner.

17. Deodorant (Speed Stick) this is applied to the skin after it has been shaved to adhere a proper stencil. The alcohol in the deodorant evaporates allowing the stencil to dry to the skin semi-permanently.

18. Stencil do your best if starting out to use a stencil, this is a great technique that will build your confidence. Or if you are free handing I have found Sharpies to work great in comparison to spending three or four dollars on one skin scribe you can get from tattoo supply companies.

Ok that is the more detailed bit on what equipment items are awesome to use for in home tattooing. Again if you have questions please post, I would like to hear positive feed back. Inspiring Short Quotes For Tattoos (Part Two)

"Believe you can, and you will."

For all the qualifications and skills you sometimes hold, none of them will ever beat belief. If you believe in something, it will believe in you too. Even if your belief falters, it will never desert you, it's always lingering around in the background, urging you on. If you truly believe something, that you can do something, belief will make sure you will.

"Let go what you can't change."

There are some things on this planet that are impossible to change, no matter how many prayers we say or how many tears we cry. Sometimes it's fate, sometimes it's just the way life goes. If you were dealt a bad hand at the casino, you can't request a new hand can you? No. Instead you either fold, give up and say you're not going to play, or you let it go, play the hand and then leave at the end of the game - or carry on. Life is like this too, some of us are dealt a bad hand, we could sit and feel sorry for ourselves, or we can let it go and continue as best we can.

In Loving Memory Memorial R.I.P. Tattoos

Finally, the last type of memorial tattoo is the simply stated, oldest sentiment in the book: R.I.P. which stands for Rest in Peace. This is, after all, our greatest hope. We pray that our loved ones who suffered through sickness, heartache, or depression, are now in a place where they can hurt no longer. We pray that they are resting peacefully as they watch over those they left behind on earth. We pray that they are resting before they find another womb to grow in, and come back to us so that we may meet again, if not in this life then certainly in the next.

How to Pick Your First Tattoo

One of the things that may be holding you back from getting your first tattoo is the permanence of the ink in your skin.

Tattoos last forever unless you can afford laser tattoo removal or other tattoo removal methods, such as Tat-B-Gone.

So, when choosing a tattoo, make sure that it's what you really want to express and how you want to express it.

Make sure that your first tattoo is something that you don't regret.

By
taking into consideration the above thoughts, you should be able to
make the decision without regrets. Just make sure that you make your
first tattoo meaningful to you and not just picture on a wall.

How to choose a tattoo

Pay heed to these steps before making your final decision:

1. Ask yourself why you even want a tattoo in the first place. Do you want to have something you love ingrained in your skin forever? Are you doing it for someone else? Are you happy you're old enough to get a tattoo without parent permission? Are you getting a discount? Think about each reason why and why not.

2. Ask if a tattoo will affect you in the workplace and other scenarios. It's most likely not worth losing a job over. Also see if there are rules against tattoos in other organizations your participate in, such as sports or volunteering.

3. Choosing a design: Make sure the design has meaning to you and that it is inevitably a reflection of the self. Thus, the design should represent something that you love, enjoy or are attached to. It may be in honor of another. Why are these things meaningful to you?Consider tattoos with writing even more. Make sure you know and understand the meanings of words, their origins, etc. If you're choosing a quote, make sure it represents you completely. Don't forget to pick the perfect font (or make your own)... typefaces create moods and feelings.

Look at other tattoos and designs that exist already, though don't restrict yourself to what's already out there. Check books, posters, stationary, stickers and anything else out there, not just the designs on the tattoo parlor walls.

4. Choosing where you want it:The placement of your tattoo on your body is very important. Do you want it to show up every day or do you want it covered up most of the time for whatever reason, whether for work or recreation? Think about the clothes you wear, how your hair is worn and the activities you participate in and how they will affect how often your tattoo shows.

You can try getting a printout of the design you are considering for your tattoo artist to recreate on your skin temporarily. Try getting a henna tattoo of the design you're thinking of before you get the real thing; henna is more temporary (lasting at least a week and up to a month) and, though you won't be able to get the colors and exact detail of what you want, you can get an idea of how it feels in a certain place at a certain size.

5. Choosing color: Do you want your tattoo in black or gray? Do you want a full-color tattoo? White? Will the color fade faster in certain places on your body? Consider the pigment of your skin and how well the color goes with it.

6. Creating the design: Be creative. Sometimes it just takes a little practice to draw your own design.

You don't have to create the design yourself; you can ask a tattoo artist to do it. Many are conventional artists that can at least copy a picture you find that you might want to base your design on. They can also reproduce it onto your skin temporarily as well as redesign a drawing you do.How big do you want this tattoo to be? Think about where it's going and if you want it to show at all. How expensive will it be? Sleeves can cost up to $300!

7. Choosing an artist: Consider what style of tattoo you like best, then find a tattoo artist that specializes in that style; even though many can achieve a wide range of looks, they usually have specialties. There are natural, Asian, black and white, comical and other types of looks to consider. The recommendations of others really help! Make sure that the artist you go to gets good props from former and/or current customers; don't just go to the nearest parlor. Look at tattoos people got from the place you're thinking about going to and see if they have the kind of look you're going for. Also consider prices. Try to get a quote before you get it because you don't want to be disappointed or angry once the tattoo is done. You may want to consider the experience the artist has. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Finally, don't be afraid to take your time in choosing. The most important thing is that you yourself are happy with the finished product. Take as much time as possible! This is something I stress.

I have wanted a tattoo since I was 10, but I knew I had to wait before I made my decision. I always thought I wanted a tattoo of my name in Korean characters and then settled on where I thought I wanted it. However, as the time approached for me to go and get my tattoo, I started to change my mind. I talked to others and looked at a lot of other tattoos before I found a design to base my tattoo on. By the time I was 19 and in the parlor I had completely changed my mind as to what I wanted (though I still wanted only a black and white tattoo). It had taken me more than eight years to make up my mind, but I'm glad I took my time.

Hawaiian Tattoos

Think about your time in the water!  New tattoos need to be kept out of water.  You will need to avoid swimming in the ocean, and soaking in pools or hot tubs for one to two weeks, until the skin fully heals and all the scabbing is done.

Think about your time in the sun!  The number one enemy of tattoos new and old is the sun:  it makes them fade in color and will even make them blur softly over time.  And when the tattoo surface is still open, you won't want to put sunscreen on it as it can contain a lot of chemicals that will irritate the healing skin wound.  Most often the best thing you can do on a beach vacation is NOT get tattooed.

If a shop or artist will only do designs off their walls and not draw something up for you, go find a new tattoo studio!  If you truly want a piece of art that you can be happy with for a lifetime, get something original from an artist, not a scratcher who only knows how to copy what someone else drew.

Getting Your First Tattoo

STEP SEVEN I'll get into tattoo parlor etiquette in another hub, but suffice it to say that even if you're getting work done by a 300-lb. man named Snake, standard rules of courtesy still apply. DO NOT try to bargain with the price quote, DO NOT brag or make offhand remarks like "My friend so-and-so said his tattoo only cost $75, and it's even smaller than mine is going to be!" Be polite--tattoo prices are not up for discussion. It's okay to be nervous, but try to keep your emotions in check. I'll never forget the embarassment I felt years ago while taking an acquaintence to get her first ink. She screamed out a horrid rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" to help her deal with the pain, then fell off the chair and crawled her way into the restroom when she thought she was going to vomit. If you get hit with a sudden wave of nausea and feel as though you might be sick, don't just jump out of the chair and sprint for the nearest bathroom as this can destroy the precise handiwork of your tattoo. Simply announce to the artist that you feel sick, he'll stop and you can head for the toilet. Finally, DO NOT enter the parlor drunk or under the influence of mind-altering substances. First of all, the artist has the right to refuse to work on you if he sees you are under the influence and secondly, you'll make a fool out of yourself. Stay as still as possible and try to relax. Focusing on something other than the pain helps (look at the artwork on the walls or a magazine in your hands.) Take deep breaths in and out and eventually your endorphins should kick in and the pain will be tolerable. At the end, thank him for his time and hand over his tip. Yes, tattoo artists get tips. Ten to twenty percent is usually a good amount. For example, I typically leave a maximum of $20 on a $100 tattoo.

STEP EIGHT It is common procedure for the artist to explain to you how to care for your new body modification, and most places will supply you with a print-out detailing proper aftercare techniques. If they do not do so, ask for a quick primer in what to do once you get home. When all is said and done, your new ink will be bandaged up with saran wrap and possibly a little bloody, but when you remove the treatment later that evening to wash it and apply the A&D cream, you'll be happy to find a crisp, fresh and hopefully beautifully completed work of art.

Get Tattooed At A Tattoo Convention

One of the features of a tattoo convention are tattoo contests. These usually have a whole bunch of "best of" categories: black and white, color, portrait, abstract, various placements, full body suits and more. There are also categories for best of the day and best in show.

Some tattoo artists are really interested in taking part in these contests, and some collectors are too. And then you'll find some artists aren't interested at all, and most people getting tattooed aren't either. If you specifically are or are not interested in taking part in a tattoo contest, this is something to talk about with your tattooist at the con. Best of the Day is ink that was entirely started and finished in a single day, and may require a serious investment in time and endurance for both tattooist and human canvas. Also recognize that contest tattoos tend to be more unique, larger and really represent a fantastic collaboration between the person doing the tattoo and the person who decides to wear it.

If you're going to get serious about contests, make sure you find an artist who is serious too, and take the time well ahead of the event to plan out what is going to happen. That's how trophies get awarded.

David Beckham's Tattoos

Having slowly grown his tattoo collection from a few random pieces to full solid sleeves, David Beckham has been adding most of his new ink to his upper chest and torso. He's still keeping the imagery all black-and-white, so the pieces from over the years all flow together nicely and he's had the artwork done so that it has background fill and isn't just a collection of floating images.

Do you think he'll just keep adding more tattoos until his entire body from the waist up is solidly-covered? Do you think he'll fill in the open spaces on this back? And do you ever think he'll start to get tattoos on his legs? Or will that wait until he's retired from playing soccer?

Can a Diabetic get Tattooed

1.  Keep the tattoo small.  The less surface area the less chance of infection and the less blood loss.

2.  Opt for black ink only (greywashed tattoos) or ask for natural pigments.  Some artists will buy a natural pigment if you request, but DO expect to pay significantly more for the tattoo.

3.  Keep the tattoo close to the heart.  Diabetics have poor circulation, and blood flow will help you to heal more rapidly.  If you are diabetic and have poor circulation in your legs then avoid tattoos on the legs or feet.

4.  Practice very good aftercare with your tattoo.  Keep it clean, clean, clean! And let it heal.  Avoid commonly used bad aftercare practices, and let the tattoo get some air.  NEVER heal a tattoo with a jar of petroleum jelly.  Especially if your dipping your hands into the jar, you're just asking for an infection.

5.  I have heard that it is helpful for diabetics to eat something before getting tattooed, but I cannot speak fro any experience on this one.  Just something to keep in mind.

Diabetics can get tattooed, just take extra precaution.  If you find a studio that will not tattoo you then just keep looking.  And take very good care of your tattoo during it's healing time.

Awesome Tattoo Ideas For Men-Popular Tattoo Symbols For Men

Koi tattoos are also a very highly sought after tattoo among men. The koi is a Japanese carp. The koi is highly valued in the Japanese culture. Although the koi is popular in Japan and other Aisan cultures, it is also popular all around the world. Koi fish are believed to have the ability to climb up waterfalls. They are often designed with water and the lotus flower.

Koi fish come in a variety of different colors as a tattoo. The orange koi is by far the most popular koi fish and the same can be said in the tattoo world. The koi fish symbolizes strength, power, masculinity, good luck, and courage. It is said that the koi is the bravest fish in the world. This meaning comes from the fact that the koi does not flinch when it is on the chopping block to be killed.

Koi fish can be tattooed nearly anywhere on the body as they can come in various sizes. Koi tattoo designs are usually very colorful and detailed. It makes for a beautiful tattoo. The symbolic meanings behind the koi fish make it a great tattoo for any male that has showed courage and bravery.

Angelina Jolie's Tattoos

Angelina has gotten three different tattoos on her stomach, but one was a cover-up of another. She claims she used to have a blue dragon on the left-hand side of her stomach, the result of an inebriated evening in the city of Amsterdam. Apparenlty she has no recollection of getting that tattoo and had the proverbial "I just woke up with it" experience. Dissatisfied with the design, she choice to have it covered up with a large, solid black cross, and later remarked that when people see the the top of the tattoo sticking up out of the waistband of her pants, some people think she's carrying a gun.

Her second stomach tattoo is a phrase in Latin that is located just below her navel. The translation of "Quod me netrit me destruit" is "What nourishes me also destroys me."

One thing many women worry about with stomach tattoos and pregnancies are that the artwork might be damaged by the stretching of the skin. I've heard both good and bad reports on this front. The first is yes, tattoos can be ruined by the skin stretching, so how fast you gain weight is something to keep an eye on. The second is that moisturizing the skin and drinking a lot of water are your best bets for avoiding any stomach tattoo damage. Rubbing cocoa butter onto your skin daily is a must! If the skin is kept hydrated enough and doesn't stretch too quickly, stretch marks can be avoided and your ink can be protected.

On one of Angie's inner thighs, she added a tattoo, which she revealed to the press as being "for Brad."

5 Things to Consider Before Getting a Tattoo

There's a lot more to getting a good tattoo than saving up some cash and picking a design. One of the regrets I hear most often from clients is that they got their first tattoo at the first shop they saw. In my experience, a person is truly ready to get a tattoo once they've:

-Thought long and hard about the piece they want
-Researched the shops in their area and chosen the cleanest, most experienced shop with the best reputation
-Looked through the artist's portfolios and chosen the one most suited to their piece
-Had a consultation with the artist
-Saved up enough money for at least the first session (if it takes more than one)

Tattoos are a beautiful thing. Take the time to do it right, and it will be a permanent piece of art that you can carry with you forever.

When ever you decide to get your tattoo, make sure you choose a place that is sanitized. Many people in prison make tattoo guns out of normal day objects. They can use the ink out of ink pens to make a blend of tattoo ink. These tattoos are also known as a "prison tat". The inmates have no way to properly clean the tattooing utensils, but some may come close if they have real good friends inside the prison. But in all seriousness, if the equipment is not cleaned properly, it can spread a host of nasty diseases that could eventually cost you your life. Such diseases as HIV, staph, herpes, infections, simplex virus, and others can be caught if the equipment is not cleaned correctly and sterile.
