If you think you are on the creative side, then its not a bad idea to design your own tattoo. For one, this makes it unique and personal to you. Moreover, if you customize it with forethought and planning, you will appreciate it even more once you see it tattooed on your body.
So where do you begin to design your own tattoo? First of all, you have to identify what you want to accomplish with your tat. Do you want to express a part of your personality? Maybe you can go with with your zodiac sign glyph and combine it with other elements significant to who you are as a person. Or maybe, you want to spread out there a belief or philosophy in life that you feel strongly about. Why not go for lettering tattoos and have your favorite quotes as the main text. Or if you want to commemorate the death of a loved one, symbols like angels, cross and flowers would always be fitting. Once you are able to determine your purpose for getting a tattoo, it would be easier for you to narrow down your ideas.
The next step for you is to check out tattoos of other people. There are many resources available both offline and online. You can look at existing flash art or tattoo photos to draw out your own ideas from. Check out ink magazines at the bookstore or library or Google tattoo designs and you will literally be faced with tons of choices. Its not that you are going to copy their body art. You are just looking for inspirations and ideas to help you come out with our own unique art.
Once you have finalized what you want to be tattooed on you, its best to consult the tattoo artist and ask for his feedback. Since he is the experienced one, he might be able to give you advice on what looks good or not or whether the design you have created is appropriate. Its always a good thing to ask the expert so you would end up regretting the tattoo later on in your life.
