Thinking Of Getting A Grim Reaper Tattoo?

To say that there are many different types of tattoo designs out there would be a tremendous understatement. No matter what type of design you would like to have crafted, you can have it done. Some of those images are highly personal. Some are drawn from pop culture. And then there are those images and designs that may be somewhat scary on the surface...literally. One such tattoo design that is popular would be that of the Grim Reaper. It should not come as much of a surprise that the Grim Reaper is a common tattoo design. This image has permeated through the centuries and has embodied many symbols to many people. As such, it should not prove shocking at all the character is an oft selected tattoo design for so many.

The Grim Reaper is, of course, a personification of Death. Although personifications of Death date back to antiquity, the common image we know of the Grim Reaper emerged roughly around the 15th Century. The notion of Death as appearing in the form of a living skeleton may originated in ancient Greek myths. In 15th Century England, the skeletal image saw a hooded robe and a scythe added to the mix. The image soon took on the notion that the creature comes to people at the moment of their death. In time, the image would be connected to the myth that those that see the image will soon die.

The Grim Reaper permeated myths and popular culture for centuries. Today, this has led the character to appearing as a common subject matter for tattoos. Why is this so? Why do so many people select this imagery for a tattoo?

The reasons are varied and this should come as no surprise. Different people will have different motivations for selecting a particular tattoo.

Horror Movie Imagery: Those that have a love for horror movies might be attracted to the ominous nature of the character. Those that want to capture a scary image, this particular character can make for a brilliant choice.

Music Imagery: Certain musical modes employ this character in their CD jacket designs. Actually, the character has been seen on LP jackets in prior generations as well. Those that have an affinity for this type of music might select the Reaper as a tattoo selection.

Tough Guy Imagery: Being a super tough guy goes hand in hand with selecting somewhat anti-social tattoo that tells people not to mess with them. Would you mess with somebody with one of these tattoos? Probably not!

It Looks Cool: Yes, some of the reasons why people select tattoos look for reasons no different than just because it looks cool. Do you really need a reason beyond simply "digging" it? Many of the tattoo designs are selected because they maintain a certain look. There is no reason for the selection other than that.
