Tattooing or the art of inserting ink or pigment into the skin as to form pictures or designs is said to have existed as early as 5000 years ago. It was after the discovery of the presence of 57 tattoos in the oldest and most well preserved corpse of a man that is now known as "Otzi the iceman." Aside from that, tattoos are also said to have been found in the bodies of other mummies like those found in the Ukok Plateau and that of the priestess Amunet in Egypt. Aside from that, it has also been part of the culture of many nations like Japan, New Zealand, Indonesia and those included in Polynesia.

Nowadays, tattoos are so common that it can be found in almost anywhere. It has become an art that can be thought to anyone who is interested in studying and perfecting it. They can even go to a tattoo school just to learn the basics and fundamentals of applying this body art.

Tattoos may have become a common sight but it is still not accepted and even considered as a taboo in many places because of the many negative things that are associated with it like criminality and rebellious attitude. However before anyone should judge people with tattoos, its good to note that tattoos not only represent undesirable things but they also signify the rich cultural, ethnic and religious history and tradition of many nations. Whether it is learned in a tattoo school or at home, tattoos are just like other forms of art that is used as a medium for expressing feelings and ideas.
