Maybe you have gone with a friend to a tattoo studio and he or she cried about how bad it hurt, and it may be effecting your decision to get one. If you weren't curious, you wouldn't have looking here, but there is no need to worry! It is difficult to explain the feel of a tattoo because it is unique to everyone and varies. The plain answer is yes, they hurt.
The feeling of a tattoo can be compared to getting scratched with something hot. Now, how much this actually causes you pain varies. Because they're born with the ability to deal with the pain of giving birth, women have a much higher tolerance to pain. So if you're a women who is worried about her first tattoo, don't worry because you have an advantage over a male; you have nature on your side! The pain in general is totally tolerable, and if you really want a tattoo, you should NOT by any means let it scare you away from getting ink done. No pain, no gain, right? After a while the area begins to dull because your endorphins are kicking anyways, so there is nothing to worry about!
Lots of people enjoy the pain of a tattoo, looking at is as just part of the whole experience. If you are not one of these people, and really don't do well with pain or needles, there is still hope for you! There are lots of companies on the market that make anesthetic creams you can apply to your skin that numb the area for hours. Now, if you are a tattoo guru this is frowned upon but if you are really nervous about how you're going to take the pain (don't be nervous, you're going to do fine), apply some of it to the area you are going to get inked half an hour before and you will barely feel anything. They really do work, so if they are selling any in your chose tattoo studio, or if you find it online, grab it if you want the numb the pain.
Tattoos are a way of life, and once you get past your first one you realize that worrying about the first wasn't an issue at all. The needle does have to puncture your skin, or else the tattoo would come right off and that would be a terrible waste of time and money, so if you want something cool you're going to have to endure it either way! It is totally a manageable pain and nothing you want to loose sleep over. When you're getting it done, it also helps to squeeze a stress ball or balled up paper towels to distract yourself. And do not drink before hand thinking it will take the edge off! It will thin your blood and you will bleed a lot, and no one wants that happening on your first time! But if all else fails, get yourself some numbing cream. You won't feel a thing; it's like a tube of tattoo training-wheels! Good luck and welcome to the tattoo world.
