Getting your first tattoo is a very big decision. It is not only reflect how you are feeling right then and there when you decide on your tattoo design, but it will reflect who you are for the rest of your life. That's a long time! You want to pick out a design that is not only cool to you now, but will mean something to you later in your life. No one wants to look at a tattoo they regret getting; it becomes an eye sore! And getting it removed with laser treatment is not your best option, so be sure to really think your tattoo through before you get it! You'll thank yourself later.
Unless you are totally committed to the idea of tattoos for the rest of your life, avoid getting your first tattoo in a constantly noticeable spot, such as your forearm, hands, neck, face, etc. If you are young and rebellious now and get a flaming skull on your forearm but down the road apply for a big corporate job and they turn you down, you might be a little unhappy. But who needs that company anyways, you're too good for them! And to women; think twice before the infamous tramp stamp/ lower-back tattoo. They may be hip now, but think of the future! Not that I don't think they're neat, just make sure you think it through.
Get inspired for a tattoo, don't just get one because you feel obligated to. Think it through, but don't think yourself out of it! If you want one, definitely get one, but make sure the design is something that is meaningful to you. Tattoo shops have books and books full of designs they have done in the past, or options to choose from. The internet also has huge galleries of tattoos you can just download and print out at home so you can pick out a design with no pressure. Once you know exactly what you want, get it in a spot you are going to enjoy seeing it for a long time, and do it! No better time than the presence.
