For many of us a tattoo is one of the biggest decisions we'll ever make. So why do we feel the need to?

It usually boils down to symbology. The tattoo symbolizes something for us, be it religious, spiritual, a state of mind, achievement or similar.

Another reason is individuality. For many a tattoo is a way to express this. They can express their personality in this way too.

Yet another reason is aesthetics. Tattoos can convey beauty, sexiness, or toughness. Some may want to enhance this aspect of their appearance, and may choose a tattoo to do it.

Some might get a tattoo to mark an important occasion, such as the birth of a child, or the death of a loved one.

Many mark significant relationships with tattoos too. Although this is often regretted if the relationship doesn't last. This usually results in repeat business for the tattoo artist in doing some cover up work!

Whatever the reason, make sure that you give it some thought, and that you get one for the right reasons. They are permanent - well sort of - so do it right the first time. The last thing you want is to carry something around with you for years to come that you just dont like.

But don't be afraid of it either, it can be a very rewarding experience. It can liberate you, it can please, and most importantly it can be enjoyed in private or by others too.
