Bearing in mind that everyone's pain threshold is different, it is true that many have reported discomfort in the lower back, when a tattoo is placed there as is common nowadays.

The lower back is an area of close skin to bone proximity, and is therefore more prone to discomfort than more fleshy areas of the body such as the upper arm and thigh.

The spine at the lower back is also quite sensitive, and among some people, tattooing will cause some discomfort, which, if truth be told, is rarely, if ever, unbearable.

Tattoos tend to hurt more in areas over bone. So if you are being tattooed directly over your spine, that may be more painful than the parts of the tattoo design that are off center.

Also, if you are concerned about possible pain, I would recommend the shading method rather than outlining, so the type of tattoo you get will be a factor.

I cannot stress highly enough the importance of visiting an experienced, professional tattooist, who would normally have a variety of ways to relieve any feelings of discomfort in the area, including giving you a break midway through the procedure, and where necessary, resuming the procedure at a future date.

Where the discomfort felt is bearable, the tattooist will apply soothing creams and ointments to further reduce untoward sensations.

For most people, the beauty and pride derived from the lower back tattoo design far outweighs the temporary discomfort they may experience during and shortly after the tattooing process.
